CapCityKids: Empowerment Academies

Empowerment Academies, a cornerstone of CapCityKids’ programming, are day-long events that focus on back-to-school readiness for students experiencing homelessness while providing their families with information about community resources. At the core of each Empowerment Academy’s mission is connection in a safe, fun, and informative environment.
CapCityKids (CCK), formally known as the Capital City Fund for Education, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) co-founded by Joslyn Dobson. The organization provides children facing homelessness with the tools they need to receive a quality education.
Empowerment Academies began by meeting a specific need: providing students with quality backpacks and grade-appropriate school supplies. The events have since expanded to encourage families to engage with supportive community programs in a lively, carnival-like atmosphere that also serves as a place to relax, reconnect with school friends, and take care of items on the back-to-school checklist.
CapCityKids has expanded its Empowerment Academy model to meet community needs at other key times throughout the year. The purpose of this white paper is to document the growth and success of Empowerment Academies so that other organizations and corporations can replicate these events in their own communities.
